92 Million Americans Say They Need Life Insurance — Are You One of Them?

LIMRA's 2026 Barometer Study finds 48% of adults own no life insurance, and 38% — about 92 million people — say they need it or need more.

Every September, Life Insurance Awareness Month puts a number on America's protection gap. The 2026 Insurance Barometer Study from LIMRA and Life Happens is blunt: 48% of American adults own no life insurance at all, and 38% — roughly 92 million adults — say they need coverage or need more than they have.

There is genuine progress. Ownership has climbed to 52% of adults, continuing a slow recovery from pandemic-era lows. People buy for the right reasons: 57% to cover final expenses, 39% to leave an inheritance, and 27% to replace a wage earner's income.

So why does the gap persist? Friction, not conviction. A third of people with a coverage gap say they simply don't know how much they need. Women report a need more often than men (41% vs. 36%), and 22 million Americans own policies they already believe are too small.

The fix is simpler than most people expect. A common starting rule is 10–12 times your annual income, adjusted for debts, childcare, and a partner's earnings. Term life — the kind most young families need — is usually the cheapest coverage you will ever buy.
